What is World Water Day? | ![]() |
Declared by the United Nationals General Assembly in 1993, World Water Day falls on March 22nd of every year. As part of the day, it is encouraged for people to not use their water taps through the entire day. Since its creation, it has gained a large amount of support with a large increase of popularity attributed to Facebook and social media as a whole. Beginning in 2003, UN-Water has had the responsibility of choosing the theme of the water day each year.
Lots of Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), such as the World Water Council, use the day to bring public attention to vital water issues that the world is currently experiencing. An exmaple of such an issue is the fact that over a billion people do not have access to clean drinking water. Starting in 2003, the United Nations releases their "UN World Water Development Report" every three years (2003, 2006, 2009, and 2012) on World Water Day.
