What is Festivus? | ![]() |
Festivus is a secular winter holiday that was invented to provide an alternative to the relentless commercialism of Christmas. Originally intended as a parody, the holiday was actually developed as part of an episode for the hit TV sitcom, Seinfeld, in 1997. During the episode, characters celebrated the newly created Festivus holiday (which falls on December 23) in a variety of humorous ways.
The “Airing of Grievances” that occurs during the Festivus feast provides all celebrants the opportunity to describe in detail the ways others have disappointed them. A Festivus pole (an aluminum pole devoid of decoration) is used as ornamentation, and a wrestling match involving the party’s host provides partygoers an opportunity to engage in “Feats of Strength.” Awkward, mundane, and unpleasant occurrences that happen on this day are referred to as “Festivus Miracles.” These ironic traditions and customs have now become part of popular culture. Communities, local businesses, college fraternities, and many other organizations throw a yearly Festivus party on December 23rd.
