The U.S. Marine Corps was founded on the 10th of November in 1775. On this day, the Second Continental Congress established the Continental Marines, which eventually evolved into the United State Marine Corps. Every year, this day is celebrated with a large, traditional ball and cake-cutting ceremony. Originally, this holiday was celebrated on July 11th was changed to November 10th in 1921 per a memorandum created by Major Edwin North McClellan. Major McClellan sent this memorandum to Commandant John A. Lejeune on October 21st, 1921. Commandmant Lejeune ordered that the Marine Corps' Birthday date be changed from July 11th to November 10th as part of Marine Corps Order 47.
