The Sturgis motorcycle rally is an annual event that attracts motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the country to the stunning black hills of Sturgis, South Dakota. The Sturgis Rally began in 1938 and was originally called the Black Hills Motor Classic. Over time, it grew from a 3 day event to a weeklong bike-fest. Between 300,000 and 500,000 riders attend this event in a typical year. Popular roadways for scenic rides include Needles Highway, Iron Mountain Road, and Spearfish Canyon. Destinations for ride include Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, and Devil’s Tower National Monument.
Concerts, competitions, bike shows, and poker runs mark this week-long bike extravaganza. Attendees can also sign up for special outings and fundraising events including the Mayors Ride and the Boz-Bros Ride to experience riding with local officials and celebrities. There are many resorts and campgrounds available for bikers including the Broken Spoke Campground and the Glenco Camp Resort.
