What is World Food Day? | ![]() |
World Food Day is dedicated to taking positive action to stamp out hunger. The date was chosen to commemorate the institution of the Food and Agriculture Organizations (FAO) as part of the United Nations in 1945. World Food Day was founded in 1979 and is observed all over the world. More than 60 organizations in North America alone band together to each year to further efforts to eliminate hunger. Events include food drives, awareness campaigns, hunger walks, and meal packaging and delivery initiatives.
How big is the hunger problem? It’s massive. In poor countries, 4 out of 10 children are dangerously malnourished and 1 in 4 has stunted growth from lack of proper nutrition. Even in the United States, about 1 in 5 children don’t get enough to eat. In total, 805 million people worldwide endure chronic hunger—even though global food production is more than adequate to keep all humans fed. Happily, since 2000, forty countries have reduced the percentage of their populations living in hunger by 50%.
