|When is World Down Syndrome Day in 2017?|
The date of World Down Syndrome Day in 2017 is on Tuesday, March 21st.
|What is World Down Syndrome Day?|
World Down Syndrome Day is recognized on March 21 each year. The 21st was selected because of the chromosomal arrangement known as Trisomy 21 that results in Down syndrome. This chromosomal difference is present in approximately 1 out of 800 babies. Usually, it is not fatal. However, individuals with Down syndrome do face a variety of intellectual, physical, and health effects.
The day is observed to honor individuals with Down syndrome and to advocate for their well-being. Typical topics for education and advocacy are: inclusion in community, individual rights, and access to services. People with DS, along with family, friends, physicians, advocacy groups, and other organizations come together to organize demonstrations and educational events on this day. Fun runs and athletic activities are often sponsored on March 21, along with other festivals, dances, and other celebrations.
