What is Fantasy Fest?

Fantasy fest is a yearly party held in Key West, Florida, during the month of October. This adult-oriented event is a ten-day descent into revelry that is marked with parades, costume parties, and drinks. A Fantasy Fest King and Queen are crowned each year and ride on a special float in the main parade. This honor is bestowed on Key West residents who raise the greatest amount of money for the non-profit organization AIDS Help to assist people living with HIV. The royal winners are dubbed Conch King and Queen.

The festival was first organized in 1978 as a way to stimulate the local economy. Today, more than 100,000 visitors attend each year, overrunning the island. Costume competitions are a popular activity-and not just for humans. The Pretenders in Paradise contest is matched by the Pet Masquerade. During the festival, a two-day street party is also observed that puts special focus on the heritage, culture, food, and arts of the Bahamian population in Key West.
