Star Wars Day is a popular but not officially recognized holiday that celebrates the Star Wars movies, media, and related merchandise. Movie fans of all ages use this day as a chance to wear elaborate costumes, role play favorite scenes, view George Lucas films, and remember the history and legacy of the Star Wars franchise. The date May the Fourth was chosen as a play on words from the benediction "May the Force Be with You." The phrase "May the Fourth Be with You" was allegedly first used to congratulate Margaret Thatcher upon her appointment as the U.K.'s Prime Minister. Today, costume contests, parodies, and all types of spinoff content are created and shared at live events and online by the vast Star Wars fan base every year. Disney Parks celebrate the holiday with themed events and appearances by employees dressed like characters from the movie.
