What is Lefthanders Day? | ![]() |
It's a right-handers world, but lefthanders have carved out one day to proclaim their uniqueness-and the uniquely frustrating experience of navigating a world that isn't designed for them. Lefthanders International founded International Lefthanders Day in 1976 and it has been observed on August 13th each year since.
Statistics about what percentage of the population is left-handed are erratic. In the U.S. and Western Europe, the figure seems to be about 12%. But in countries where children are still encouraged or pressured to conform to right-handed norms during the educational process, the percentage is much lower.
Lefthanders Day is an occasion for lefties to spread the word about what it's like to be a southpaw. It's also a great time to learn some trivia about left-handed world leaders, musicians, movie stars, athletes, and artists who are left handed. Ronald Reagan, Glen Campbell, Charlie Chaplin, Hugo Sanchez. And Michelangelo are just a few of the names on that impressive list. It's also a terrific time to buy the lefties in your life a special present-like a left handed pair of scissors!
