Waffle Day is celebrated twice per year. The March 25th date comes from a Swedish celebration (Lady Day) which has a difficult to pronounce name “Varfrudagen.” This word sounds a bit like Waffle Day (in Swedish) if you say it fast—or with your mouth full of waffles. The Swedes have been cooking crispy and delicious waffles since the 17th century, and it’s a long-standing tradition to eat them with blueberry and raspberry jam to mark the beginning of spring.
In the United States, the 24th of August marks the day when inventor Cornelius Swartwout was granted the first U.S. patent for a waffle iron. This heavy cast-iron contraption looked like a pan with a handle. It fit directly into an old-fashioned coal or gas stovetop in place of one of the existing stove lids. You can celebrate Waffle Day the modern way with an electric waffle iron. Or, head to a local diner to get a piping hot, corrugated breakfast food topped with whipped cream, syrup, or powdered sugar.
