What is Tequila Day? | ![]() |
National Tequila Day, like Rum Day and Vodka Day, is a national beverage-related holiday that celebrates a favorite liquor. Tequila is made primarily from the sap of the blue agave plant, which is fermented and distilled to create the clear golden liquid that is so popular at parties. Contrary to popular misconception, Tequila doesn't have a worm or beetle larva in the bottle. That distinction belongs to Mezcal-a slightly lower grade liquor that is made from other varieties of agave plant.
Tequila is named after the region where most of the blue agave is produced, a town called Tequila in western Mexico. In fact, the nation of Mexico only allows the production of tequila in certain areas of a few Mexican states. That being said, there are more than 900 brands of this beverage. Tequila Day provides a good excuse to enjoy a tequila-based beverage like the Margarita, or to enjoy a shot neat. With 12.3 million cases imported into the U.S. each year, there's plenty to go around!
