What is Black Day? | ![]() |
Black Day is an annual celebration in South Korea that sets aside April 14th each year to honor singles. In South Korean culture, Valentine's Day on February 14th is observed by women giving chocolate and other gifts to the men in their lives. White Day, one month later on March 14th, is an opportunity for men to reciprocate. So, Black Day serves as an unofficial holiday for men and women who did not receive any gifts from a romantic interest.
These unfortunate singles gather in groups, dressed all in black, to eat a dish called jajangmyeon (noodles with black bean paste) which is a favorite comfort food. They use this opportunity to complain about their sad, single status. Like Valentine's Day and White Day, Black Day is highly commercialized. Local restaurants and stores use this opportunity to sell black-colored food and beverages. Noodle-eating contests and events such as speed dating are very popular.
