Japan, South Korea, and China have two traditional days of romance. On February 14th, Valentine’s Day is a time for women and girls to give tasty chocolate and other special gifts to their husbands or boyfriends, as well as to male friends and coworkers. One month later, on White Day, men are expected to reciprocate by presenting their wives, girlfriends, and female coworkers with tokens of affection. White and dark chocolate, lollipops, hard candy, marshmallows, and cookies are popular presents. Gifts of obligation or courtesy usually involve chocolate. More serious or intimate relationships might be celebrated with gifts of white lingerie or jewelry. On White Day, men are expected to spend several times the amount their female counterparts did on Valentine’s Day. White Day was originally called Marshmallow day and was invented by a Japanese confectionary.
