What is Towel Day? | ![]() |
Towel Day on May 25th celebrates the life and works of Douglas Adams, the author of "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." The day of recognition was proposed by a fan, D. Clyde Williamson, to fall on a date two weeks after the death of the author. Those who love Adams' book carry a towel with them on this special occasion. The act is in reference to a passage in the book where Adams proclaims that a man who has a towel with him can accomplish anything. Apparently, if one has such a useful object as a towel on hand, it is assumed that one is a person to be reckoned with. Fans post pictures on social media of themselves holding or wearing towels. An Intergalactic Towel Day Ambassador may be chosen to advocate for wider recognition of the day and to represent Earth. Apparel (such as shorts and scarves) may be made of towels, and fans may have towel decorating contests as well.
