What is National Coming Out Day? | ![]() |
National Coming Out Day (NCOD) is a day of observance to support members of the LGBTQ+ community in the process of disclosing their sexual orientation and/or gender identity to family, friends, and the community. The day was originally designated in 1988 by psychologist Robert Eichberg. It was set on the anniversary of the 1987 National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights when half a million people participated in a civil rights march. Since 1990, NCOD has been observed in all 50 states and many other countries.
A theme is chosen for each year. Past themes have included "Live Your Truth", "Talk About It", and "Coming Out Still Matters." The day is recognized and celebrated in many different ways. Participants, including LGBTQ+ individuals and straight allies may wear rainbow or pink triangle symbols to show support and raise awareness. Rallies, parades, and educational events also mark the occasion.
