What is World Diabetes Day? | ![]() |
World Diabetes Day is an international health day to raise awareness about diabetes and advocate for patients suffering from this chronic disorder. It is spearheaded by the International Diabetes Foundation and more than 200 member organizations that address diabetes. The day has been recognized since 1991, and the United Nations officially designated November 14th as World Diabetes Day in 2007. This date was selected to celebrate the birth of Frederick Banting, one of the scientists whose work was instrumental in the discovery of insulin.
Themes for the day vary. From 2014 through 2016, the chosen theme was Healthy Living and Diabetes. The theme focuses on healthy food choices to prevent and control type II diabetes. Events surrounding World Diabetes Day include free blood sugar screenings, sports events, diabetes workshops, runs and walks, and educational events. Groups of dozens or hundreds of individuals may gather for group photos, standing in a circle and wearing blue shirts, to replicate the World Diabetes Day logo.
