What is Cheeseburger Day? | ![]() |
National Cheeseburger Day falls in September, which is perfect grilling season across much of the United States. This is a day to celebrate America's favorite sandwich (the burger) and the favorite topping (cheese). While some will fire up the BBQ to commemorate this unofficial food holiday, most Americans will head to their favorite burger joint. As with Ice Cream Day and Hot Dog Day, local eateries and national fast food chains are eager to hand out coupons and special deals to engage hungry celebrants.
The tradition of melting slice of cheese on a hot meat patty goes back at least as far as the 1920s. Legend has it that the first cheeseburger was invented in California when a sandwich shop chef named Lionel Sternberger decided to slap a slice of good old American cheese on a sizzling burger. However, other restauranteurs have claimed to invent this now-classic sandwich-and some have even sought to trademark the name.
