The Calgary Stampede is a Canadian rodeo and exhibition that takes place each summer in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The ten day event is one of Canada's largest festivals, with thousands of volunteers contributing to the effort. Annual attendance ranges from 350,000 to 425,000 rodeo goers. The event is opened each year with a parade complete with floats, marching bands, and hundreds of horses. Rodeo entrants vie for prizes of $100,000 for each competition category (including barrel racing, bull riding, and steer wrestling), and the championship prize of $1,000,000.
Chuckwagon racing and other western-themed events entertain attendees, while agricultural exhibitions provide education about current and historical ranching and farming practices. Demonstrations range from stock herding trials with trained dogs to blacksmithing competitions featuring skilled artisans. Festival participants can shop at the Stampede Market and enjoy carnival games in the midway. Concerts are also offered for music lovers; acts range from rock and pop artists to country stars such as Garth Brooks.
