The United States Air Force was officially founded on September 18^th, 1947. While the Army and Navy were formed during the time of the Revolutionary War, the technology to create an aerial military force had not yet even been conceived. But the use of planes in the U.S. military does predate World War II. In fact, the military purchased its first aircraft in 1909, when the Aeronautical Section, Signal Corps was founded. Even before that, the Union forces in the Civil war used hot air balloons for aerial reconnaissance. Today, the USAF operates more than 5,000 military aircraft as well as 450 ICBMs and dozens of military satellites. The birthday for the United States Air Force is marked with celebrations, commemorations, ceremonies, and an annual ball.
