What is Guy Fawkes Night? | ![]() |
Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night is a yearly celebration of the failed assassination attempt on the life of King George I in 1605. The famous “Gunpowder Plot” involved Fawkes and some compatriots who managed to secure a leased storage space in the cellar beneath the House of Lords. They stocked the space with gunpowder, but Fawkes was apprehended in the act of guarding the powder on the night of November 4th. The following day quickly became a national time of celebration. It was marked with strong anti-Catholic rhetoric for many years, due to the religious and political affiliation of Fawkes and his co-conspirators. Today, celebrants of this night view it simply as a chance to get together and enjoy a bonfire with fireworks. The burning in effigy of Guy Fawkes does still figure in some events.
