|What is Turkey Trot?|
A turkey trot is a lighthearted footrace that is held on or near Thanksgiving Day in the United States. This style of fun run provides an opportunity for communities to gather and "trot off" all the extra calories consumed during the annual feast. A turkey trot may be used as a fundraiser in the week leading up to Thanksgiving as a way to provide for families in need over the holiday. The money raised goes to purchasing meals and other necessities for low-income families, while the actual winner of the event typically goes home with a frozen turkey.
Turkey trots have a long history in the United States, dating back to 1896 when the Buffalo Turkey Trot was first organized. This particular fun run is the oldest public racing event still going on today. One of the largest Turkey Trot events takes place in Dallas, attracting more than 25,000 runners each year. Canadians also have a popular Turkey Trot in Ontario on their Thanksgiving Day (the second Monday in October). In the U.K. Turkey Trots are held closer to Christmas.
