What is High Five Day? | ![]() |
High Five Day is an annual celebration that falls on the 3rd Thursday in April each year. Like Hug Day and Kiss Day, this informal holiday encourages making more physical contact with those around you. But while strangers may give you the stink-eye for trying to steal a kiss, many people will participate in a high-five without batting an eye. All you have to do is make the international hand symbol (raising your hand above shoulder level in a relaxed gesture with the palm facing out) and say, “Gimme five!” You can then expect to get your hand slapped—in a good way.
The tradition of High Five Day originated in 2002 with college students at several universities in Virginia, California, Oregon, and New York. A group of students gave out high fives and lemonade to lift peoples’ spirits and generate goodwill. Eventually, the holiday was turned into a fundraising opportunity, with events like the National High-5-A-Thon being used to raise money for cancer research. See how many high fives you can give on this day, take a selfie while high-fiving a celebrity, or arrange a high-five outing to a local nursing home to spread some cheer. Whatever you do, don’t leave anyone hanging.
