National Cancer Survivors Day was founded in 1987 at a conference hosted by the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship. It falls on the first Sunday in June each year. Hospitals, support groups, and local communities band together to celebrate this day with festivities in honor of the more than 14 million Americans living with a history of cancer. Parades, art exhibits, walks, runs, and contests mark the occasion. These events are sometimes organized as fundraisers for cancer research, screening, and treatment. Survivors are often invited so speak out about their experience with diagnosis, treatment, and life after diagnosis.
An important goal of Cancer Survivors Day is to highlight the challenges survivors face beyond diagnosis and treatment. These individuals may be denied health and life insurance, have difficulty finding employment, and face significant financial burdens. However, the purpose of this day is to demonstrate that cancer is not a death sentence—that life after cancer can be fulfilling and enjoyable despite its challenges.
