The Ryder Cup, officially referred to as the Ryder Cup Matches, is an international match-play golf tournament between the United States and Europe. The tournament occurs every two years and is jointly hosted by the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) of America and the PGA European Tour. The contest alternates courses between the US and Europe.
The first unofficial Ryder Cup took place in 1926 when a golf team comprised of American golfers challenged a golfing team drawn from the British PGA. This first contest took place on the East Course of Wentworth Club in Surrey, England. The name Ryder Cup comes from the name of the English businessman Samuel Ryder who donated the trophy. The first official Ryder Cup tournament occurred the following year at the Worchester Country Club in Massachusetts, United States.
Originally, the tourney was played between the US and Great Britain but the European squad expanded to include Ireland in 1973 and then the rest of the continental Europe in 1979. Since 1927, the American squad has won the Ryder Cup trophy twenty-five whiles the European team has taken the trophy home twelve times.
