The NBA Finals is the ultimate championship series of the NBA (National Basketball Association) league. The first NBA championship was held in 1947. Originally, the NBA Finals was known as the NBA World Championship Series until 1986 when the name changed. The NBA Finals is a best-of-seven series between the winners of the NBA's two conferences, the Western and Eastern conferences. The first team to win four games in the NBA Finals is crowned the NBA World Champion and since 1978 the champions have received the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy. Before 1977, the NBA champions were awarded the Walter A. Brown trophy.
The format of the NBA Finals series is 2-3-2, meaning that the first two games and last two games are held at the stadium of the team who had a better regular season record and earned a higher seed than their opponent.

The most successful NBA team in terms of the number of NBA Finals they have appeared in is the Los Angles Lakers. The Lakers have appeared in 31 NBA Finals and have won 16 of them.
