What is NBA All-Star Game? | ![]() |
First played in 1951, the NBA All-Star Game is an annual exhibition game played between the NBA's best and most popular players from the Eastern and Western conferences. The starting five players, three frontcourt players and two guars, for each conference are selected by the fans while the rest of the reserve players are chosen by the coaches of the team's respective conference. In the occassion that one of the players selected for the All-Star Game cannot play, then a replacement is selected by the NBA Commissioner. The head coach of the team with the best record the previous year is chosen to coach their respective conference. There is a rule in that prevents a head coach from coaching two consecutive All-Star Games. This allows more coaches to get the prestigous opportunity to coach the NBA's best players.
The NBA All-Star Game was created in 1951 by the NBA President Maurice Podoloff, NBA PR Director Haskell Cohen and Boston Celtics Owner Walter A. Brown. Basketballs popularity had taken a huge hit as part of the college point-shaving scandal and this trio was looking for a way to bring positive attention to the NBA. Major League Baseball was the first league to put on an exhibition All-Star Game and the NBA was hopefully their version of the game would be just as successful. The Eastern Conference All-Stars defeated the Western Conference All-Stars by a score of 111-94 in the first ever NBA All-Star Game on March 2nd, 1951. Overall, the Eastern Conference has fared better in the game with 37-wins to the Western Conference's 26 wins.
