What is MLB Draft? | ![]() |
The MLB Draft, also known as the 1st year player draft or the Rule 4 draft, is Major League Baseball's annual event in which amateur baseball players are assigned to baseball team organizations. The pool of players includes high school, college, other amateur baseball clubs, and international baseball prospects. The order of the draft itself is determined by the final standings of the previous season. The team with the worst record receives the first pick while the team with the best record earns the last pick. Compensatory picks also occur for teams that have lost high-profile free agents that ended up signing with another team.
The first MLB Draft was held in 1965. Unlike the major of drafts occuring in the sports world, the baseball draft occurs during the middle of the baseball seaosn in June. Typically, drafts are held during the off-season. Another unique feature of Major League Baseball's Draft is its size and duration. The entire draft is 40-rounds long before compensatory picks are considered, typically occuring over a three-day period. The NHL and NFL drafts are both 7-rounds while the NBA Draft is only 2-rounds.
