The inaugural World Cup was hosted in 1930 and has occurred every four years except for the years 1942 and 1946 as a result of World War II. Since 1930, the World Cup has become the world’s most widely viewed sporting event.

This marks the second time that Brazil is hosting the ultimate international soccer championship. The first time Brazil hosted the tournament was in 1950.
The present-day format of the World Cup tourney involves thirty-two national teams battling for the FIFA World Cup Trophy and the title of World Champions. In the three years prior to the World Cup, there is an intense qualification process that determines which thirty-two countries will be represented in the tournament.
The most successful country in FIFA World Cup history is Brazil who has won the World Cup title five times. The next two World Cups will be hosted by Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022.
