What is NFL Draft? | ![]() |
The annual National Football League (NFL) Draft, sometimes referred to as the player selection meeting, allows NFL teams to select college football players that are eligible for the draft. This single event accounts for the most popular source of player recruitment. The order of the draft is based on the previous season's records, with the worst teams selecting first and the best teams selecting last. When it is their turn to pick, teams can either select, or "draft", a player or they can trade that pick to another team for a player(s) or another draft pick(s). Each round consists of one pick per team, so 32 total picks per round. Each draft consists of 7 rounds, so at minimum 224 draft picks per draft. There are some rules that allow teams to receive "consolation" picks for various reasons, however the logic behind that concept is too complex to explain here.
