What is PGA U.S. Open? | ![]() |
The Professional Golfer's Association's (PGA) U.S. Open, properly called the United States Open Championship, is one of the four major golf tournaments played every year in the United States. The other three major PGA tournaments are the Open Championship (British Open), the Masters Tournament, and the PGA Championship. The tourney is hosted by the United States Golf Association (USGA) in the middle of June. The final round is always scheduled to be played on the third Sunday in June, which is Father's Day.
The U.S. Open is hosted at different golf courses around the United States each year. Typically, the course will be quite long and will contain a high primary rough (nicknamed "Open rough"), skinny fairways, and tiny greens.
The U.S. Open is extremely unique if there are two or more golfers tied at the end of the fourth and final 18-hole round. Typically, the players will go into a sudden death playoff meaning they will play each hole one by one until one of the players scores lower than the other golfers on one of the holes and that golfer is crowned the champion. In the U.S. Open, the tied players play an entire 18-hole playoff round to determine the winner. If there is still a tie after the additional 18 holes, a sudden death playoff will be used.
