The Women's World Cup is an international football (soccer) tournament that is hosted by FIFA (Federation International Football Association) every four years. The competition features the senior women's national teams from countries who are qualified for the event. The Women's World Cup was created in 1991, 61-years after the men's version was founded, and has occured every four years since. The United States defeated Norway in the first ever Women's World Cup that was hosted in China in 1991.
Canada won the right to host the World Cup in 2015, which is the 7th edition of the tourney. There was only one other country to place a bid for the opportunity of hosting the tournament, which was Zimbabwe. The matches will be held in Montreal, Edmonton, Vancouver, Winniped, Ottawa, and Moncton.
The modern day version of the tournament features 24 teams that compete for the title within a three-week period. Qualification for the 24 spots occurs within the three years prior to the FIFA Women's World Cup.
