The Sugar Bowl is one of the main college football bowl games played every year in the United States. First played on January 1st, 1935, it is tied with the Orange Bowl and Sun Bowl for the second-oldest college football bowl games behind the Rose Bowl. Throughout it's existence, the game has been sponsored by USF&G Financial Services, Nokia, and currently Allstate. The game is currently held in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana and typically occurs on New Year's Day, January 1st.
As part of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS), the Sugar Bowl hosted two National Championship Games in 2000 and 2004. With the introduction of a college football playoff system in 2015, the Rose Bowl will be in a 3-year rotation with the Rose Bowl, Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Chick-fil-A, and Fiesta Bowls to host a semi-final BCS game. When it is not hosting a semi-final game, the Sugar Bowl will feature the champions of the SEC and Big 12 conferences. If one of the champions from those two conferences is playing in the semi-final game that year then the next team in the conference standings will take its place.
In 2014, Oklahoma defeated Alabama 45-31 in the Sugar Bowl.
