The Australian Tennis Open Championship, typically referred to as the Australian Open, is the first of the four major tennis tournaments (also including the French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open) held every year in Australia. The tourney occurs every year over the last 14-days of the month of January in Melbourne at the Melbourne Park facility, which features a hard, plexicushion surface. It was first held in 1905 and features men's and women's singles; men's, women's, and mixed doubles, and junior's championships as well as whellchair, legends and exhibition tennis events.
In terms of annual attendance, the Australian Open is the second most popular tennis event behind the U.S. Open.
