The Long Beach Grand Prix, officially known as the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, is a major open-wheel motor race features on a tricky street circuit in Long Beach, California, United States. Founded by Christopher Pook in 1975, it is the longest running major race hosted in North America. The race was the premier Champ Car racing class starting in 1996 as part of the American Championship. Beginning in 2004, the event was the first race as part of the World Series of racing before merging with the Indy Racing Leage (IRL) and is now a part of the Verizon IndyCar Series.
In 1975, the event was a Formula 5000 race hosted in the downtown area before becoming a Formula One race in 1976. The race is eighty 1.968 milelong laps with a total distance of 157.44 miles or 253.375 kilometers. The circuit is near the waterfront and surrounds the Long Beach Convention Center and The Pike amusement zone. Bruce Flanders has announced the race every year since 1978 along with his various guest announcers. Al Unser, Jr has the most all-time wins with six.
The annual Long Beach Grand Prix is held every April in Long Beach and is the largest and most exciting event the city experiences each year. More than 200,000 people attend the race weekend every year.
