What is Sziget Festival?

The Sziget Festival is a Hungarian music and cultural festival held each summer on Obudai-sziget Island on the Danube River in Budapest. This week-long event features more than 1,000 performances. Hundreds of thousands of visitors travel from all over Western Europe to attend the event. Part amusement park, part rock concert, the festival has been compared to both Woodstock and Burning Man.

The music extravaganza began as a small student-organized effort after the fall of Communism in 1989 when the summer festival scene lost government funding. The first event was held in 1993 and the festival operated at a loss until 1997 when sponsorship from Pepsi helped it find its feet. Iggy Pop, Bastille, Klaxons, The Prodigy, and Fink have all been featured at the festival. However, genres other than rock are also represented including blues, jazz, and world music.
