|What is SXSW?|
SXSW stands for "South by Southwest," a trio of major film, interactive, and music festivals and conferences that are held typically in March every year in Austin, Texas. South by Southwest was founded in 1987 by the trio of Roland Swenson (staffer), Louis Black (editor), and Nick Barbaro (published). Swenson, Black, and Barbaro all worked together at The Austin Chronicle. SXSW is ran and operated by SXSW Inc., which is responsible for the planning and execution of the conferences, trade shows, concerts, festivals, and any other events. SXSW Inc. is also in charge of the planning and excution of SXSWedu and SXSW Eco, two conferences that were founded in 2011 for education innovation and environmental awareness, respectively.
SXSW Music Festival in 2015 is the largest music festival of its kind in the entire world. There are more than 2,200 official performers every year that perform in 100+ different venues across Austin. In its first year, SXSW Music in March of 1987 attracted only 700 attendees but has expanded to 12,000+ registrants in 2012. Some of the most notable performers at SXSW that later went on to get signed by major record labels are the band Hanson (1994), John Mayer (2000), and James Blunt (2004).
SXSW Film is a film festival dedicated to showcasing new talent in the film industry, specifically directing. Major filsm to debut at SXSM Film include The Hurt Locker, Bridesmaids, and 21 Jump Street. The actor Fred Armisen gained national attention in 1998 when he produced the short firm Fred Armisen's Guide to Music and SXSW.
SXSW Interactive Festival is focused on emerging technology. The festival has come to be known as a breeding ground for new ideas and cutting-edge technologies. Some of the highlights from SXSW over the years have been interviews and panels with Wikipedia's co-founder Jimmy Wales, Craigslist founde Craig Newmark, Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and the launch of the mobile app Foursquare.
Since 1993, South by Southwest has been held in the Austin Convention Center. The longest SXSW event to date was in 2011 when the entire event lasted for 10-days. SXSW Interactive lasted for five days, SXSW Music for six days, and SXSW Film for nine days.
