What is Beale Street Music Festival? | ![]() |
The Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis, Tennessee, occurs on the first weekend in May each year. It is hosted on Beale St. between East Street and the Mississippi river. The musical performances center around the four stages in Tom Lee Park on the shore of the river. More than 60 acts hit the stage during the festival which has been characterized as "the Mardi Gras of the Mid-South."
Famous artists who have performed at the event include Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jerry Lee Lewis, B.B. King, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, and James Brown. There is a heavy emphasis on Blues, as Beale Street is widely recognized as the birth-place of this somber and soulful musical genre. While A-list performers grace the main stages, local artists are featured at restaurants and other venues all along Beale. More than 100,000 visitors attend each night of the festival. Attendees are free to come and go, sampling music, food, and drinks throughout the neighborhood.
