What is Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival? | ![]() |
Founded in 2001, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, also referred to as HSB or Strictly Bluegrass, is a major free and non-commercial music festival that is held over the first weekend of October every year in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, California. The event was created by Warren Hellman, a major venture capitalist in San Francisco, who subsidizes the festival. He does so in order to make sure the music festival remains completely free and non-commercial. As a result, the event is very pure as the main focus is on music and community.
Originally, the festival only featured bluegrass music but has recently expanded to feature additional genres, hence the current name Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. Over 750,000 attend the 3-day event. Some of the most popular artists who have performed at the festival include Emmylou Harrisa, Hazel Dickens, Robert Earl Keen, Earl Scruggs, Buddy Miller, Moonalice, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Nick Lowe.
