What is Lollapalooza? | ![]() |
Lollapalooza is a major music festival that is hosted every year at various locations around the globe. The festival was founded in 1991 by Jane's Addiction's singer Perry Farrell. It was originally just supposed to be a farewell tour for his band but it continued to run until 1997. Lollapalooza was revived again in 2003 as traveling music festival touring North America. In 2005, Perry Farrell and the William Morris Agency agreed to partner with Capital Sports Entertainement (now C3 Presents) based out of Austin, Texas. The group agreed to change the format of the festival from a touring base festival to a "weekend destination festival" hosted at Grant Park in Chicago, Illinois.
In 2010, Lollapalooza announced that it would expand overseas the following year. In 2011, Lollapalooza was hosted at O'Higgins Park in Santiago, Chile from April 2nd-3rd. Later that year, Lollapalooza announced that they were going to add a third international location in Sao Paulo, Brazil that would launch in in 2012. The inaugural Brazilian Lollapalooza Festival was hosted at the Jockey Club in Sao Paulo from April 7th-8th. Lollapalooza was planning on expanding to Tel-Aviv, Israel in 2013 but was cancelled as a result of having difficulty booking the musical artists among other major problems.
Over 160,000 people come together for Lollapalooza 2016 each year. Some of the most popular artists to perform at Lollapalooza include Muse, the Beastie Boys, Deadmau5, Pearl Jam, The Cure, The SMashing Pumpkins, Foster the People, Calvin Harris, Daft Punk, Kanye West, and Lady Gaga.
