What is FIFA World Cup?

The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup is the ultimate international men’s football (commonly known as soccer in the United States) championship that occurs every four years.  The inaugural World Cup was hosted in 1930 and has occurred every four years except for the years 1942 and 1946 as a result of World War II. Since 1930, the World Cup has become the world’s most widely viewed sporting event.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup hosted in Russia will be the 21st FIFA World Cup. The 2018 World Cup begins on the 8th of June and ends on the 8th of July, totaling 32 days. 

The present-day format of the World Cup tourney involves thirty-two national teams battling for the FIFA World Cup Trophy and the title of World Champions. In the three years prior to the World Cup, there is an intense qualification process that determines which thirty-two countries will be represented in the tournament.

The most successful country in FIFA World Cup history is Brazil who has won the World Cup title five times. The next World Cup will be hosted by Qatar in 2022.
