The race is 26.219 miles long and goes through the five boroughs (The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island) of New York City. It is one of the largest marathons in the world with over 45,000 entrants each year and is one of the World Marathon Majors along with the Chicago, Boston, London, Berlin, and Tokyo marathons. 

The New York City Marathon was founded in 1970 and has run every year since, typically held on the first Sunday in November. Currently the NYC Marathon is organzied by the New York Road Runners (NYRR) and is sponded by ING.
