What is Rose Bowl? | ![]() |
The Rose Bowl, now formally referred to as the Rose Bowl presented by Northwestern Mutual, is a major college football game that occurs every year, typically on January 1st at the Rose Bowl Stadium Pasadena, California. The only times the game does not occur on New Year's Day is when the 1st of January is on a Sunday. In the situation, the game is played on Monday, January 2nd.
Created in 1902, the Rose Bowl game is occassionally called The Granddaddy Of Them All because it is the oldest college bowl game. There was a short period where the game did not occur but is has been played every year since 1916. Beginning in 1945, it has been the most attended annual football game. Unless the Rose Bowl is serving as the BCS National Championship Game then it occurs in the afternoon.
As part of the new College Football Playoff system beginning in 2015, the Rose Bowl will experience a three-year rotation along with the Orange, Cotton, Peach, Sugar, and Fiesta bowl games to host a semifinal BCS game. In the current alignment, when it is not hosting a semifinal game the Rose Bowl features the champions of the Big Ten and Pacific-12 Conferences. The only time the bowl game does not feature those two conference champs is if one of them is competing in the College Football Championship Game - in that case the next team in the respective conference standings will play in the game.
The game is also part of the Tournament of Roses, known as America's New Year Celebration. This entire event also includes the Tournament of Roses Parade, which is broadcasted nationally on television.
