What is Miss USA?

The Miss USA beauty pageant (not to be confused with the Miss America pageant) is a national event that features contestants who are pageant winners from each of the 50 states. The event changes dates and venues each year. It is typically televised on NBC.  Since the pageant's inception in 1950, the organization has passed through a number of hands. In 1996, the pageant was purchased by business mogul Donald Trump.

Contestants are judged on appearance, style, deportment, talents, personality, and many other traits. There is a strong focus on beauty and fashion, with swimsuit and gown competitions as highlights of the preliminary contest the week prior to the final event. When a winner is crowned, she agrees to live in New York City during her year as reigning queen. She also typically goes on to represent the United States in the Miss Universe Pageant. Additional awards are given for Miss Amity, Miss Congeniality, and Miss Photogenic.
