What is Black Friday? | ![]() |
Black Friday is the Friday following the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States. For many retailers, Black Friday marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. It has become common practice for retailers to offer extreme discounts on their existing goods in order to clear out inventory space before the Christmas holiday. In recent years, stores have began to open up earlier and earlier in order to kick off the busy holiday shopping season.
Black Friday is not an official national holiday but it is common practice for employees and students to have both Thanksgiving day and the following day off, followed by the weekend, in order to travel and see friends and family. The fact that most people have Black Friday off increases the numbers of potential shoppers. Black Friday has quickly become the busiest shopping day throughout the entire year.
The term "Black Friday" was created in Philadelphia stemming from the state of the city as a result of the thick pedestrian and vehicle traffic that would routinely occur the date after Thanksgiving. The term started becoming popular around 1960 before spreading out from Philadelphia to the rest of the United States around 1975. Another explanation for the term "Black Friday" is that the day marks the beginning of the period where retailers start to operate in the black, meaning they are beginning to earn a profit.
Initially, stores would open their doors on Black Friday at 6:00 AM but in recent years retailers have begun to open their doors earlier and earlier each year. Towards the end of the 2000's, some retailers began opening their doors at 5:00 AM or even 4:00 AM. Starting in 2011, major retailers such as Best Buy, Macy's, and Target opened their doors as early as midnight (or 12:00 AM).
It is common practice for consumers to line up several hours before stores open their doors as a result of promotional deals that are offered in limited quantity. In recent years, Black Friday has become known for the increasing amount of crimes and incidents that surround the day of shopping including assaults, robberies, shootings, and even resports of people people trampled to death as the stampedes of shoppers rush into the stores.
