What is Mother's Day? | ![]() |
Mother's Day is observed on the second Sunday of May and celebrates mothers and the important role they serve as part of a family and in society. It is no secret that mothers play an integral part of any family, especially when it comes to raising children. It is common for children and relatives to buy gifts, flowers, jewelery, and cards for their mothers, grandmothers, and motherly figures on Mother's Day as a way to honor their loved ones and also display their thankfulness for everything their mother has done for them and their family.
Mother's Day originated in the United States in 1908 and since then has became one of the most popular holidays in the United States. The first year that Mother's Day was recognized as a national American holiday was in 1914 by Woodrow Wilson but the holiday did not start to become popular until the 1920's.
It is mentionable that the holiday is officially spelled as "Mother's Day" instead of "Mothers Day." The singularity of the official holiday name is as a result of the efforts of the woman credited with founding the modern Mother's Day holiday, Anna Jarvis. Anna trademarked the phrase "Mother's Day" as she wanted families to spend the day honoring their own mother rather than celebrating all the mothers around the world.
