The Women's World Cup is an international football (soccer) tournament that is hosted by FIFA (Federation International Football Association) every four years. The competition features the senior women's national teams from countries who are qualified for the event. The Women's World Cup was created in 1991, 61-years after the men's version was founded, and has occured every four years since. The United States defeated Norway in the first ever Women's World Cup that was hosted in China in 1991.
The World Cup 2019 host country has yet to be selected by FIFA. There are currently three countries making a push to host the competition, which are France, South Korea, and South Africa. Englad and New Zealand originally bid for the opportunity but have withdrawn their bids. The 2019 tournament will be the eighth Women's World Cup.
The modern day version of the tournament features 24 teams that compete for the title within a three-week period. Qualification for the 24 spots occurs within the three years prior to the FIFA Women's World Cup.
