What is Essence Music Festival? | ![]() |
The Essence Music Festival, commonly referred to as "the party with a purpose" or simply Essence Fest, is a major music festival hosted by ESSENCE Magazine every year in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. The original event, shoted in 1995, was supposed to be only a one-time event to celebrate the 21st annivery of the ESSENCE magazine, which is primarily provided for African-American women. Since then, Essence Music Festival has become the largest event that celebrates African-American cultrue and music in the United States.
Some of the biggest musical acts to perform at the festival include Destiny's Child, Alicia Keys, The Roots, Mary J. Blige, Stevie Wonder, Jamie Foxx, Dianne Reeves, prince, Anthony Hamilton, LL Cool J, Common, John Legend, Aretha Franklin, Earth Wind & Fire, Chris Brown, Kanya West, Rihanna, Beyonce, Janet Jackson, Usher, Lionel Richie and many more!
Essence Fest has been held in New Orleans, Lousiana every year except in 2006 where it was held in Houston, Texas as a result of Hurricane Katrina, which deveastated the New Orleans area.
