What is Monterey Jazz Festival? |
 |
The Monterey Jazz Festival is held each year in Monterey, California. It was founded in 1958 by Jimmy Lyons (a radio broadcaster in San Francisco). The event takes place on the Monterey County Fairgrounds where the 20 acre venue hosts more than 50 performances on 9 stages. Over 500 jazz, blues, and rock artists gather to entertain the crowds. On a busy year, more than 40,000 people flock to the Fairgrounds to enjoy the music. Past acts have included Dave Brubeck, Diana Krall, Pat Metheny, Christian McBride, and Trombone Shorty. The concerts are accompanied by panel discussions, exhibitions, and many other activities for jazz enthusiasts. The Festival donates its proceeds to musical education, and invests more than $600,000 per year in scholarships and educational funding for student musicians.
