What is World Turtle Day ? | ![]() |
World Turtle Day was founded in 2000 and is sponsored by American Tortoise Rescue. The goal of this day is to celebrate turtles and tortoises—and to ensure that they are protected. Educational events and projects are scheduled for this day, and some kids dress in green or wear turtle costumes to celebrate.
Did You Know? Many turtle species are decreasing in numbers in the wild due to habitat loss and poaching for food and the exotic pet trade. In captivity and as pets, turtles are often victims of mistreatment and neglect. Six out of the seven saltwater turtle species are listed as endangered or critically endangered. Of the more than 250 species of freshwater turtles, about half are threatened or endangered.
World Turtle Day is a great time to learn facts about turtles, including the proper care of pet turtles and how to rescue a tortoise that is trying to cross a busy street. Letter writing campaigns and environmental cleanup events are also popular ways to participate.
