What is World Book Day ? | ![]() |
World Book Day is an annual event that was founded in 1995 by the United Nations. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) organizes World Book and Copyright Day to celebrate the joy of reading and to recognize the authors and illustrators who make that experience possible.
Author Miguel de Cervantes (who wrote Don Quixote) as well as William Shakespeare and other well-known authors died on April 23, and their works in particular are commemorated on this day. Readings of Don Quixote in Spain can last for two days. Communities, schools, libraries, and organizations in over 100 countries celebrate book day with charity events and activities that invite children and adults to read more and to appreciate fine literature.
